Pain Alleviation Modalities

What is Pain Alleviation Modalities?

Pain-relief modalities are hands-off, machine-based treatments used alongside exercise and manual therapy to reduce pain, ease muscle tension, and support tissue healing.

What the Research Says

Laser therapy shows a clinically meaningful pain and quality-of-life benefit versus sham treatment across multiple trials, though evidence quality varies.

Therapeutic ultrasound and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) both show measurable pain and function improvements in conditions like rotator cuff tendinopathy and knee osteoarthritis.

TENS is a widely used adjunct for pain relief, with low-quality but consistent evidence of short-term benefit when combined with standard physiotherapy.

Bottom line: these modalities work best as a supporting tool alongside exercise and manual therapy — not as a stand-alone fix.

Modalities We Use

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) – Mild electrical pulses delivered through skin pads to block pain signals and ease muscle or nerve-related discomfort. Often used for acute or chronic pain during and after sessions.

Therapeutic Ultrasound – Sound waves delivered through a handheld probe to warm deep tissue, improve blood flow, and support healing. Commonly used for tendon, ligament, and soft tissue injuries.

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) – Low-intensity light applied to the skin to reduce inflammation and stimulate cellular repair. Used for tendinopathy, joint pain, and slow-healing soft tissue injuries.

Infrared Lamps – Infrared light that gently heats tissue to relax muscles and improve local circulation before treatment. Helpful for stiffness, tension, and preparing tissue for exercise or manual therapy.

Is It Safe?

Yes, when applied by a trained physiotherapist. Settings are matched to your condition and skin sensitivity, and modalities are avoided over areas with pacemakers, open wounds, or reduced sensation as appropriate.
