Pelvic Floor Muscle Rehab

What is Pelvic Floor Muscle Rehab?

Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) is evidence-based physiotherapy that strengthens the muscles controlling bladder and bowel function — helping reduce leakage, urgency, and improve day-to-day confidence.

What the Research Says

A 2025 Cochrane review confirms PFMT is more effective than no treatment for urinary incontinence in women, and is recommended as first-line conservative care.

PFMT shows a 92% likelihood of significant symptom improvement for postmenopausal women with urinary incontinence.

PFMT can strengthen the external anal sphincter and pelvic floor, helping improve faecal (bowel) incontinence as well as urinary symptoms.

Feedback and biofeedback tools can support training, though evidence on their added benefit over PFMT alone is still mixed.

Bottom line: targeted pelvic floor training is a well-evidenced, first-line treatment for both urinary and bowel incontinence — not something you have to just manage.

How We Use It & Who It's For

Stress & urge urinary incontinence – leakage with coughing, sneezing, exercise, or urgency

Bowel (faecal) incontinence – strengthening sphincter and pelvic floor control

Postnatal, menopausal & general pelvic floor weakness

Pelvic floor issues linked to other conditions – e.g. following stroke or MS

Typical plan: pelvic floor assessment, individualised strengthening programme, bladder/bowel habit guidance, and progress review.

Is It Safe?

Yes, when guided by a trained pelvic health physiotherapist. Assessment and treatment are private and comfort-led, with non-invasive options always available if you prefer.
